Why Old School? | It brings me back to why I loved the game in the first place. The art, the game play, the simplicity and complexity of it all. A format of only 900ish cards and only a small portion of them truly great and yet it keeps seeing innovation that excites me. And most of all the people. Old Schoolers are a special group. A group of welcoming gamers who love this game so much they will go out of their way to play it liek it used to be. Oh and beer .... lots of beer. |

Why Old School? | I was into sports cards in the late 80s early 90s. When Magic came to my local sports card store we were given a box of alpha to playtest. We had no idea what we were doing and you really couldn’t play the game with 1 box. We thought it was garbage so that weekend we tried to trade it at a Sports Card Convention and no one wanted it or knew what it was. That night after the show we proceeded to fling alpha cards off of a 4 story parking garage in Tucson Arizona. I know for a fact at least 1 Dual land was lost and I’m pretty sure we launched a Black Lotus. Only because I remember the flower art and we had no idea of the cards potential value or ability. Didn’t see Magic again until I was in the Army in 1995 WOTC sent out a ton of the 4th edition boxes that had the little crystal beads in them. Dark and Light Blue ones with a bag. We had a ton of that stuff and played in Bosnia for most of 1995. Then when I got back to Germany I found a sports card store that sold Magic cards and we added Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Fallen Empires, Ice Age and Mirage. Was a blast and I used to hold tournaments at my house. I gave up Magic until 2012 when my son started playing it in High School and it drew me back in. Old School returns me to where I was really just enjoying a card game with friends on weekends. |

Why Old School? | No plainswalker garage. Artifacts are brown. The art direction is on point. While players of other formats lament Hasbro decisions, we are totally free to do our own thing. Sober or not, OS provides a great mental, social, and creative outlet in our increasingly digital world. Even if you could Orb flip on MTGO, it wouldn't be the same! |

Why Old School? | The community is amazing. It's so great to learn this format with the support of players who are so welcoming. Also, I love Dark Ritualing into good creatures whenever possible (this one is also why I play Legacy). ;) |

Why Old School? | If our local OS group had come up with Wizard's
original pro-tour slogan it would have been: "Play the Game. See your local bars, and also your kids when you get home
at a respectable hour. Unless you want to be a degenerate, then we have cube and no one will judge you as long as you get
them a beer and don't cut them off of blue."
I value excellent gameplay and people who are ok with how weird I am above all else. I find both of these things, occasionally at the same time, with The Emerald City Trolls. Just happy to be here instead of neverending spoiler season. This is an excellent creative and/or competitive outlet. I found a group of like-minded individuals from different backgrounds who just love the game and want more people to play with. That's what it's all about. I've been showing up regularly for 18 months and have found that the point to showing up to an OS group is to see how strange it all really is. The point of sticking around seems to be to make it even stranger for the next poor soul who shows up and wants a piece. |

Why Old School? | Many of the cards I play with I opened in
packs myself, so the connection is strong. Especially the more worn they are, because that means I scuffed them up
myself with a lot of bare shuffling. I can’t remember why I was so mad about people using sleeves back then.
I still despise auto-includes like the Power 9, and especially the ubiquitous Sol Ring. I traded them away early and will probably never own them again. I prefer X pt or other restrictions that push people to have significantly different decks. I both love and hate that the card pool doesn’t change. When I get bored of it, I can leave it alone for a while and when I come back it’s like I never left. It’s happened many times over the last 30 years. |

Most OS Card | Black Lotus |
Why Old School? | I started in Revised and always heard about the Black Lotus and Moxen, but never tried them in any format. In the last 2 years when my buddy Jacob introduced me to the format, I found out you could use the CE/IE versions of power in Old School. I was immediately drawn in and slowly hunted down CE/IE power. Eventually I had a deck and played at an OS meetup with Portland based group The Horde. It was then that I realized just how fun the format was, but more importantly how awesome the community was. |

Decks | I'll play anything with Counterspells and restricted cards! My first OS deck was UR Counterburn, though I've started preferring American Skies, and sometimes I'll play Keeper / The Deck |
Favorite OS Creature | Serra Angel. Nothing could challenge her on the elementary school playground! |
Favorite OS Spell | Demonic Tutor. It's very satisfying to tutor up the perfect card for any situation; a powerful effect that scales up with your understanding of the game. I try to play this card (and the often-fetched Mind Twist) in every deck, whether or not black is one of the listed colors. |
Most OS Card | MOAT = Moistest Of All Time. One of the most striking differences between early and contemporary card design are the early experiments with single cards that fundamentally change the rules of the game... often with the effect that your opponent doesn't get to play Magic anymore. I enjoy revisiting those simpler, more innocent times! (I could have just as easily listed Winter Orb, Stasis, The Abyss, Nether Void, or the rich and varied suite of land destruction effects from those years.) |
Why Old School? | It's been a lot of fun coming back to familiar old cards from my first year of playing Magic, now with a more adult understanding of the strategy of the game, as well as access to the Ancient Powerful Magicks of pre-Revised sets! 🔮 I also adore the aesthetic of white borders, and I play as many Revised/4th/Chronicles cards in my OS decks as I can. What's more old school than a border color they don't even make anymore?? |

Favorite OS Creature | Juzam Djinn |
Favorite OS Spell | Time Walk - when I was young taking an extra turn seemed SO BROKEN |
Most OS Card | Lich. Dangerous, powerful, often self-destructive or pointless. Yes! |
Why Old School? | I played a lot of Magic as a kid, but I started in '95. Never had power or any of the other cards that didn't get reprinted in Revised (I traded my playset of Volcanics for a playset of Juggernauts, because duh, he's way better than a land), and only had a few cards from the early expansions. But I remember how cool those powerful Type 1 decks seemed, playing all kinds of ridiculous cards that did such powerful things. I mean, there were people spending hundreds of dollars on their decks! In OS, I get to try building with those cards myself now, and just happened to find out that the OS community is amazing to boot! |

Favorite OS Spell | Give me a deep cut in a spicy build |
Most OS Card | Chaos Orb or Library of Alexandria |
Why Old School? | In its brief 10 year history ('93 to '03) Magic the Gathering developed a devoted following and years later people still play multiple formats using this old CCG. Play magic how Richard Garfield intended |
